TeenAlive Commerates the 62nd Edition of the African women’s day in Missellele
TeenAlive on the 31st of August joined the global community to celebrate the 62nd edition of the African women’s with the women and girls of Missellele, under the theme: Women at the heart of reinforced training, technology and innovation, for inclusive and sustainable education in Africa”.
African Women’s Day (AWD) was established on the 31st July 1962 in Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), where women from across the African continent met for the first time and created the first women’s organization in Africa, called ‘‘African Women’s Conference’’ (AWC). Adopted by the United Nations (UN) and the Organization of the African Union (OAU) in 1962, this day was officially recognized on 31 July 1974, during the congress of the Pan-African Women’s Organization which held in Dakar, Senegal.
African Women’s Day is celebrated with great enthusiasm across the continent on 31 July each year. Far from being just another excuse for women to celebrate, it is a showcase that not only highlights government policies and actions in favour of African women, but also serves as a reminder of the important role they play in the continent’s development.
Over 50 women in Missellele were engaged on Gender Based Violence Awareness, Educational talks on the importance of Educating a girl child ,Health talks, Positive parenting and a practical session on the production of Bleach. This was in order to empower the women with hands on skills which they can monetize and support their day- day activities. Thirty bottles of bleach were produced by the women during this activity.
It is worthy of note that the African women’s day is not quite popular in local communities, this activity was also a d awareness raising activity in communities on the commemoration of this day across the globe.
